My Garden
Kuzmina Alena, 8A
We have a garden 16 km away from our place. It is very small, but we found it possible to plant apple-trees and pear-tree, cheery-trees and sea-buckthorn-trees, raseberry-bushes and currant-bushes as well as to build a summerhouse and a garage there. And we still have some arable soil and a tiny meadow with three birch-trees on it. We usually don’t work too much in the garden, hut when we find time for going there we can never be out of work, especially in spring and autumn. There is also a lot of trouble with sowing because we usually argue about the place where to sow the certain vegetable. For one, my Grandfather Benjamin always tries to force us to plough the meadow, but it is still there because the rest of the family defend this piece of nature. Of course, we could cultivate all the territory and spend all the holidays in the garden, but in this case the garden would look dull and we wouldn’t be able to make some interesting trips in summer. Then we make supplies of vegetables, spices, jams, juices and salads. We usually store all the food from our garden in the pit under our garage in the city. This supply consists of pickled tomatos and cucumbers, strawberry, rasberry, currant, cherry, apple, pear and sea-bluckthorn jams and juices, beets, carrots, potatos and some salads. To reach such results a tremendous amount of work must be done. I am not a boaster, but I am the one to do most of the routine work about the garden. In spring I have to dig, to loosen and to water — that is to prepare the soil for sowing. Then I usually take part in the sowing procedure, but my favourite work is waging a global war with weedings. Besides, I usually wash our car and repair it when the damages are not serious. In autumn my duty is to gather different berries, fruit and vegetables, to pull up turnips, beets, carrots and so on, and to graze near pea-bushes, beans and sunflowers. I usually manage with the last job fairly easy and one needn’t make me do it. No doubt, that is all very good, but there will be no full garden without a loveless meadow, three birch-trees and a small pine-tree, that we brought from the forest about four years ago. It adds much to the rare moments of relaxing atmosphere in our garden. Besides, we have two bird-houses, which are visited, I don’t know why, only by sparrows and never by starlings. After a hard day it is extremely pleasant to lay down into the grass to watch the birds bathing in the reddening sun and to inhale the powdered freshness of the coming night. So, our garden is very useful to the family in both feeding and resting and we like to take care of it very much.
