Civil war is an ever gaping wound of America

«Gone With The Wind» is a classical American movie. It was stage from the novel by Margaret Mitchell. The main theme of both works is Civil War in America. This problem is shown from the point of view of Confederation of Southern states.

From the very beginning of the novel we are involved into atmosphere of holiday, endless holiday. The main heroes are happy. They are full of life and love. Their surroundings are luxury and jewellery. They behave as people of high-class society of Old World. Men feel themselves as Cavaliers and women as Ladies. Scarlet O’Hara and Ashley Wilks are vivid examples of it.

When the news of war comes to this land, it does not change anything. People are not afraid. They are sure in their invincibility. They, especially men, discuss this problem as an ordinary thing to show honour and dignity, the main qualities for them. Yankees do not have these qualities so they will be defeated.

The Southerners are mistaken. They forget that a new power has come, a power of Money (with capital letter). It brings a new ideology: «Money is everything!» The Grey Army does not realise it. So it does not understand words of Mind (with capital letter). The words, that are said by Rett Battler, that North is more developed region and it has more money than South. The main reason of this behaviour is their nature of unemployed persons. All their economy, even culture, is based on cotton and slavery. It differs them from the North industry and it’s longing for money.

So the people of the South feel the hardships of the war more keenly than the people of the North. Every white man who can fight goes into the army. The women of the South take care of the farms and plantations, serve in hospital and gather money to help the soldiers. They face al difficulties bravely.

Nevertheless, the South has to defeat, because money are stronger than honour and dignity. Rett Battler helps the South only to earn money. His corrupted soul is shown realistic near the actions of Melany Wilks when she gives her ring to support her husband in the trouble. However, Rett brings a wind of changes. The wind that makes the noble Southerners civilization «gone with the wind».
