LESSON 2. THE IRISH PEOPLE. IMAGES AND STEREOTYPES.

OBJECTIVES:

to get an insight into the Irish national identity;
to discuss materials reflecting the European press description of the Irish;
to develop study and research skills, communicative skills.

TECHNIQUES:— brainstorming;

— discussion;

— groupwork;

— lining in me cnan.

MATERIALS: — an extract from «Gone With the Wind»;

— listening materials;

— pictures of the Irish.

ACTIVITY 1

DISCUSSION. The teacher stimulates the students to discuss their feelings on arrival to a foreign country. The students are likely to enumerate nervousness, anxiety, happiness, sadness and so on.

ACTIVITY 2

BRAINSTORMTNG. The students write down the words they associate with the Irish concerning their appearance, habits, lifestyles and national character. Then they share their opinions with the groupmates and the teacher.

ACTIVITY 3

LISTENING. The students listen to the recording of a European journalist who

expresses his view on the Irish. While listening, the students fill in the chart:

The teacher encourages the students’ discussion of the role of stereotypes in our life and their influence upon people od different nations.

ACTIVITY 4

READING. The students read an extract from the book ^uGone With the Wind» by

Margaret Mitchell and discuss the image of Gerald O’Hara paying attention to his

appearance, habits, traits of character, values. Then they fill in the next line of the

chart.

ACTIVITY 5

SPEAKING. The students talk to a specialist on Ireland its people. They ask him

questions to get the necessary infomation to fill in the chart.

ACTIVITY 6

The students analyse the chart and draw an image of an Irishman.

ACTIVITY 7

ROUND-UP DISCUSSION. The teacher stimulates the students to share their impressions on the Irish and summarizes how the image of the Irish changed in students’ minds within the course.

HOMETASK. The students write an essay on cultural topics relating to the Irish.
