Before we start practising a teacher explains the situation. All the students imagine they have been selected as participants of the cultural exchange programme which offers an opportunity for the fulfilment of national and individual goals. Any exchange progamme helps to bring people together and is vitally important, creating personal bonds which will last a lifetime.
Being representatives of Russia abroad the students can tell people as much as they can about their own culture and country. Moreover, as a future leader a student takes back his or her valuable ideas and impressions — a new perspective of the world, a deeper understanding and vision of what is being achieved in Europe.
The most important thing about all this is that students change their world perceptions, that they feel responsible for being intercultural communicators. To help people understand each other is the main purpose of their mission. It’s up to them to decide how they will use their experience and knowledge in this field in their life.
LESSON 1. IRELAND. INVESTIGATING THE COUNTRY.
- to make students reflect on the Irish identity:
- to develop study and research skills;
- to encourage cooperation.
MATERIALS: — reference materials;
— recordings ( «The Celts», accents and dialects of English-
speaking people from different countries);
— a map of Ireland;
— pictures of floral symbols of great Britain;
— videofilms («Ireland», «Gone With the Wind»);
Students listen to the melody «The Celts» (or watch soundless video) and try to create their own image of the country.
GROUPWORK. Stimulated by the teacher, the students exchange their ideas in groups and make up short stories.
LISTENING & WATCHING; WRITING. The students watch the videofilm once
more (with the sound on) and fill in the cards:

Then the students add new information to their stories.
LISTENING. The students listen to the recording of six native speakers of English from different countries describing their capital cities. The listeners try to recognise accents, using the clues and putting the Dumber of the speaker into the right box.
DISCUSSION. The students try to investigate how the historic events influenced the
formation of the language and the nation.
GROUPWORK. The teacher divides the class into groups of 3-4 and stimulates the discussion asking questions of the type: «Why are there so many people in the USA who have Irish origin?» «What tradition unites the Irish all over the world?»
The students start creating «A-Z of Ireland».
