Ирландия: модуль 1

OBJECTIVES:— to make students aware of similarities and differences  between Ireland and the countries of Europe;

— to let students explore of Ireland’s contribution to the world
culture.

TECHNIQUES:— discussion;

—  decision making;

—  reading for detail;

—  quiz;

—  pairwork.

MATERIALS: — a reference book;

—  a letter;

—  a map.

ACTIVITY 1

PRE-READING. The teacher stimulates the students to discuss what they know about Ireland by asking questions of the type: «Where is Ireland situated?» «What is the country famous for?»

ACTIVITY 2

QUIZ SOLVING. The students solve the quiz using their background knowledge and the information from the article «A-Z of Ireland»(«The Eropean Magazine» 1-7 August, 1996) . When they are through, they check the answers in groups and then in the whole group.

a)    hockey;

b)   Oyster festival;

c)    Eisteddfodd.

7. Languages spoken in Ireland are:

a) Hindi and English;                 b) Irish and Cymrie;

c) Irish and English.

8. Ireland’s second name is:

ACTIVITY 3

FILLING IN THE CARD. The students fill in the card using the information they got

from the quiz:

The teacher should draw the students’attention to the fact that Ireland,being an independent country with its own government, currency, language, traditions, still has strong links with the UK and the rest of Europe.

ACTIVITY 4

READING A LETTER. The teacher asks students to read a part of Alice’s letter to her

friend:

Some Irish people I met in Dublin invited me to spend a few days in their cottage near the Atlantic coast. You know I’m used to staying in camring sites and youth hostels but that place was so wild and primitive that there was no electricity or running water there. And I had such an amazing experience there. We went for a walk one day and sudenly we found a long, white, empty beach. It was like a paradise beach. We started walkin along it and then a few minutes later we heard a noise like hundreds of trumpeting elephants. It was so loud I thought I was going crazy! We climbed some rocks and I could hardly believe my eyes when I got to the top. To my

surprise, there was another Ion white beach and on it were hundreds of seals! Hie sight was so amazing that I took a whole roll of film. Fortunately, I had a spare one. I’ll show you the photos when I get back. But I’m sure that neither a book, nor a film, nor photos could express the beauty, the atmosphere, the spirit of the place.

POST-READING. Using the map, the students answer the teacher’s questions:

—  Which part of Ireland did Alice go to?

—  Was she an experienced traveller?

—  What made the trip amazing?

ACTIVITY 5

PAIRWORK. The teacher stimulates the students to share their travelling experiences

with their partners.

HOMETASK. The students write letters to their friends describing their travelling experiences.
